Trench Fighting 1914-18
With the onset of winter in 1914 the Western Front finally congealed: the trench war had begun, and was to continue for four years as vast armies faced eac other across a wilderness of barbed wire and shell holes. This was the war of attrition in which to gain a few yards of front a generation was sacrificed.
