The war on the Eastern Front, 1941-1945, was the most bitterly contested, vicious and bloody campaign of the second world war. The conflict, lasting four long years, was fought in one of the harshest environments in the world and cost over 30 million soldiers and civilians their lives. The devastating campaign left the whole of Poland, Germany and European Russia in ruins, and set the tone of East - West relations for over 50 years.
