Muscat Command The Muscat Regiment in Oman in 1967
The memoirs of a British Grenadier Guards officer who was seconded to command the Muscat Regiment for the Sultan of Muscat and Oman , 1967 - 1970 . He gives a detailed account of his unit's operations in the Dhofar war of 1965 -1975 while he was in theater . It is unusual for a Senior Officer in the British Army to enjoy success as a West End playwright, but Peter Thwaites was by any standards an unusual man. Muscat Command was written in the last years of his life, a spirited account of the two years he spent in command of the Muscat Regiment. Unhappily, debilitated as he was by severe kidney disease, progress was slow and he failed to complete the manuscript before he died in 1991. In order that Peter's book could be published, the last three chapters have been written by his former Adjutant and Company Commander, Simon Sloane. Peter Thwaites was born in Westmorland in 1926. Educated at Rugby he was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1944. A series of regimental and staff appointments culminated in command of the Muscat Regiment from 1967 1970 as a loan service officer. During this time he was awarded the Sultan's Bravery Medal, the Special Commendation and the Distinguished Service Medal for Gallantry. Peter's vivid prose not only describes the highly unusual conditions with which he was faced, but reveals him as a remarkably sensitive and perceptive man. The Ministry of Defence is often accused of putting round pegs in square holes, but in Peter's case there can be no doubt that the right man was in the right place at the right time. He retired from the Service in 1975 and returned to Muscat in 1976 as Chairman of the Sultan's Joint Staff, a post which he held for four years until his final retirement in 1980. Appendices list officers , awards and casualties.
