Operation Avalanche Salerno Landings, 1943
The Allied landings on the Italian coat at Salerno before dawn on 9th September 1943 seem a part of one of the half forgotten campaigns of the Second World War, yet, in its day it was the largest amphibious invasions in history and it barely escaped becoming the Allies' costliest blunder. The book recreates the 21 critical days of horror and carnage that followed the Anglo American invasion of Salerno, south of the Bay of Naples in September 1943. Under the command of ambitious U S Commander General Mark Clark, the allied forces came perilously close to defeat.
